In Defense of a Potential Lack of Upgrade to Windows Phone 7 for the HTC HD2

There has been confusion with the HTC HD2 upgrade path to Windows Phone 7 Series, with HTC Russia retracting their unofficial yes and Microsoft stating that all devices must have the Windows Phone 7 three buttons, and after seeing the device at GDC, it makes sense for several reasons.

The three buttons are a back button, a Windows button, and search. Those three buttons, combined with the OS in Windows Phone 7 Series, help to create a great user experience, and that is one area that Microsoft is placing heavy emphasis in. According to Loke-Uei at the Lobby Lounge at the Microsoft stand at GDC, the search button is context sensitive, meaning that if you hit the button in your contacts application, it will search for relevant contacts. With the HTC HD2 having 5 buttons, 3 of the 5 can be mapped to the back, Windows, and search buttons, but being that the OS is targeted more at consumers, it may create some confusion since those buttons are already hard-labeled on the HD2 for their functions right now.

Additionally, although the HTC HD2 meets the screen resolution down on a capacitive touchscreen as one requirement for Windows Phone 7 Series, Microsoft still has not stated what the exact CPU, GPU, and RAM requirements would be. Microsoft is creating standards here to make it easier for developers to build apps and games for Windows Phone 7 Series, so it makes sense to not only have common APIs, but also have similar hardware. In the video below from part of a GDC session, Microsoft is stating that OEM variations may come in the form of a hardware keyboard. This way, with similar other specs--RAM, memory, processor, and graphics--the Windows Phone 7 user experience--an area that Microsoft is stressing--will be similar across all makes and models of phones.

We'll try to get an official answer at MIX10 or at CTIA in a few short weeks and let you know what Microsoft and HTC will announce for the HTC HD2, but for now it may make the most sense to keep a unified, simple, and consumer user experience

(Tired of this yet?) Two More Votes for HD2 WP7S Upgrade

We know, you're tired of hearing about this yes/no/maybe deliberation of whether the HD2 will be getting Windows Phone 7 Series. But for those of you that do care (those that own the HD2), we've got two more votes for "yes" for the upgrade. Before that, check out Chuong's recent article: In Defense of a Potential Lack of Upgrade to Windows Phone 7 for the HTC HD2.

Click for larger image.

In this first screenshot, we see a recent exchange between HTC Iberia support and a customer with a question. When asked about the WP7 upgrade, the HTC rep states:

Concerning your question, we can inform you that we are working along with Microsoft and plan to bring a Windows Mobile 7 ROM update, but for now we do not have a release date.

In this second screenshot taken from XDA, an HTC UK support rep states:

When Windows Mobile 7 been released then your device can upgrade to WM7.

We're just a few days away from knowing with 100% certainty (presumably) at MIX 2010. Or, it's possible that we'll be left with the same level of uncertainty until CTIA In a few weeks. My personal opinion is that at this point, we're at a "No" (especially after reading Chuong's article mentioned above). But have faith, have faith.

Windows Phone 7 Series Theme Shown on HD2

Take a look at this video of the HD2 running what appears to be Windows Phone 7 Series. The three buttons on the bottom are virtual. In actuality, this is just a really good skin of WP7S on Throttle Launcher. XDA user arley12 is the one behind the project, and claims that he will be releasing the skin "soon". We're curious as to how deep the skin goes, but we imagine that it's more of a program launcher than it is a complete interface change. More as it comes!

Microsoft confirms again – NO Windows Phone 7 Series support for HTC HD2

Here’s the statement that zdnet.com received from a Microsoft mobile spokesperson via e-mail:
“For Windows Phone 7 Series we are enforcing a strict set of hardware requirements to ensure a consistently great experience for end-users and developers. While we cannot confirm that WM6.X phones that satisfy those requirements will be upgradeable, every Windows Phone 7 Series device will be upgradeable with improvements and features we deliver with subsequent Windows Phone 7 Series releases. We currently do not have plans to update the HTC HD2 to Windows Phone 7 Series.”
So there you have it. Windows Mobile 6.x devices are not going to be able to meet the new stricter Windows Phone 7 chassis specs to which Microsoft is holding phone makers.

HTC HD Mini lock screen cab now available for download

The HTC HD Mini features a pretty nice lock screen, as can be seen from the video above.
Michyprima has now made the software available as a cab, which I have tested on the HTC HD2 and found to work pretty well.
Michyprima warns that the PIN lock screen however no longer works, so if you use this security on your phone this cab will not be suitable.
Download the cab here.
Thanks Fotone for the tip.

Microsoft on HTC HD2 WP7 upgrade: HD2 “doesn’t qualify because it doesn’t have the three buttons”

HTC HD2 owners hoping for some good news regarding a Windows Phone 7 seriesupgrade for the HTC HD2 can it seems now officially lower their expectations to zero.
Microsoft has confirmed, in an interview with APC Magazine, that the device does not meet their very strict criteria for the new OS.
Natasha Kwan, General Manager for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business in the Asia-Pacific region, told APC:
“Because we have very specific requirements for Windows Phone 7 Series the current phones we have right now will not be upgradable”; the HD2 “doesn’t qualify because it doesn’t have the three buttons”.
Tony Wilkinson, Business Operations Director for Microsoft Australia, hinted to APC that it may be due to more than that however. “There are some hardware components that the HD doesn’t have”.
Microsoft is hoping to keep Windows Mobile 6.5 in the market as a low cost and enterprise platform however, and hope recent enhancements to the OS will keep it competitive.
“We think there are people who will want 6.5, and the 6.x platform has a lot of enterprise and line of business apps” Kwan said. “A lot of 6.5 applications have been built very much from the old paradigm of the stylus. Those legacy apps will be a lot more compatible on 6.5.3 because we have magnifier technology which lets you use your finger for navigating, even though it has a much bigger surface area.”
Has Microsoft just scuppered future sales of the HTC HD2? Let us know below.

Windows Phone 7 Series UI Clone being Developed for WM 6.x

You knew this was coming and that it was only a matter of time, but there’s now a Windows Phone 7 Series themed shell being developed by Jaxbot at XDA-developers. It’s not much to look at right now, seeing how it’s a new project and riddled with bugs, but it’s still kind of intriguing to see. Check out the video preview below.

It’s only an alpha, but here’s what’s working so far:

• Set Phone, Text, Outlook, and People to a certain app
• See upcoming appointments on lock screen
• See information on live tiles

There’s no doubt that an unofficial WP7S UI would be popular among the WM community, so it’s good to see the ball rolling already. I wouldn't mind seeing that lockscreen released as a separate app when it's polished off and completed :). Take the early test release for a spin (VGA/WVGA only) and view the discussion at XDA-developers.

Download Swype v3.9 for HTC HD2

There is a new version of Swype for HTC HD2 floating around the Internet now. Some said that this version 3.9.10.10.5032 was extracted from the leak T-Mobile USA HTC HD2 ROM. It was redesigned to suite HTC HD2 and has bigger soft keypads.

Well, I only tested Swype v3.9 on HTC HD2. I believe it will work on other Windows Mobile devices with WVGA screen size . By the way, you can get the older version here.
Download Swype v3.9 here.

HTC HD2 Caught Running Windows Phone 7 Series

Keep in mind though that such images can easily be Photoshopped to look like the real deal when it is not. HTC HD2 by all means meets all the specs which Microsoft has made mandatory for a Windows Phone 7 Series device including a 1Ghz processor, over 512MB of RAM, a large multitouch capacitive touchscreen and so on. The only hardware requirement which HD2 is missing is the dedicated Bing search button for the device. Currently though, neither Microsoft nor HTC has denied the possibility of Windows Phone OS 7.0 upgrade for HTC HD2. This is what the official Windows Phone account on twittersaid about this possible upgrade.
to everyone asking about HD2 & Windows Phone 7 Series; nothing announced yet but there may be info coming next month

WinMo 7 Startup Screen

Windows Phone 7 series was released merely 5 days ago and already [ElCondor] has a new startup for it. [ElCondor] took the newest design, logo and slogan of WP7S and made it into something that enhances your excitement of restarting your device. The startup is made for all resolutions, so no one is left out, and all you do is install the CAB and your set.
“This looks pixilated but the dithering isn’t visible on your screen! It prevents gradient banding.”

Opera Mobile 10.3 released, now supports Windows Mobile Standard, Flash Lite

The latest version of Opera Mobile 10 has now been released for Windows Mobile.  Beta 3 does not bring much user interface changes, but does finally bring a modern Opera browser to Windows Mobile Standard.
Additional features include Flash Lite support, and due to the Click to play feature this will not slow down the browser in general use. Flash Lite 3.1 support is disabled by default, but can be enabled by visiting Tools -> Settings -> Advanced and set plug-ins to "On".

The main improvements from the previous betas are:
  • keypad/smartphone support
  • Flash Lite 3.1 support (disabled by default)
  • Complete bookmark sync in Opera Link
  • BIDI support also for language extensions
  • phone numbers in plain text are converted to links
  • support for background sound
  • general bug fixing (stability, UI)
Known issues include:
  • Opera Link: Bookmarks saved in Beta 2 are lost when upgrading to Beta 3
  • Hotmail does not work, please use the mobile version www.hotmail.com/m
  • Dragonfly – need to do ‘connect’ two times in a row to get a connection working
  • Flash is only a preview/in alpha state, expect instabilities, performance degradation during use
  • Flash is only supported on touch devices
  • Need to double-click on Flash content to view it in full-screen, another double-click to return
  • right-to-left support is not complete in the UI
  • On certain WM5 Smartphone/WM6 Standard devices, the dictionary is not disabled in the password field
  • Unable to type special characters on Moto Q9
  • Certain HTC devices with TouchFLO will force Opera back to portrait mode if visiting home screen when Opera is in landscape
  • Some input method editors are known not to work well with Opera because they do not comply with Microsoft’s SIP and/or IME standard.
Unfortunately there is no support for multi-touch or the accelerometer on the HTC HD2 at present.
Read more on www.opera.com/mobile or download the browser atwww.opera.com/mobile/download/ from a PC or "m.opera.com" from a mobile phone.

Microsoft already setup for MWC

Well Mobile World Conference is only 4 days away and it seems our guys at Microsoft are already caking for this event. The show starts money February 5th, which as you can tell is mealy 4 days away, but that still seems like ages to most.

We have some pretty high hope for this show and at this point. The show will either be the biggest ever with the announcement of WM7 or the dumbest so far with the announcement of anything that is not equally as cool as WM7. To sum up what we expect from this MWC here is my personal list:
  • WM7, well we are all waiting for this announcement and some screenshots of what we are going to be working with.
  • New devices, well from what we see so far, almost none of our current hardware can run WM7, except one which leads me to #3.
  • HD2 upgrade to WM7, I know everyone is waiting for this and even though I am HD2-less I am hoping with you.
  • free update for current 6.5 devices to 6.5.3, well that one should not be too hard.
  • A more lifely show that does not put us to sleep like CES did for me.

HTC Flashlight

The latest version of the HTC HD2 ROMs contain some interesting new apps, including an ereader, but also this new HTC Flashlight app, which makes pretty good use of the super-bright dual LEF flashlights in the monster.
The cab  can be downloaded for your HTC HD2 from XDA-Developers here.

StartMenu Grid 4 Large

Are 3 rows honeycomb items in Windows Mobile Start Menu does not enough for you? Need to swipe up quite some times in order to reach the program that you want? There is a tweak to make 4, 5 or even 6 rows on your Windows Mobile Start Menu. It works on my HTC HD2, and I think it will work on other Windows Mobile devices like Samsung Omnia II, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, X2… And it works on multiple screen resolution like WVGA, VGA, QVGA and WQVGA.

Download StartMenu Grid 4 Large cab here. Or head to xda website to download 5 / 6 rows mod.

Keypad Led Control

Some people requested a way to keep the keypad lights on while the display is not in standby.
By default the keypad lights turn off after 10 seconds when the device comes out of standby. This little tool keeps the light on while the display is on.

Code found in Htc Sense

The code from which TouchFlo3D/HTC Sense in constructed will apparently still overlay Windows Mobile 7, with the software apparently already checking for the presence of the OS, even in current builds.
XDA-Developers member CookieMonster found this code in Manila 2.5.1922 lua scripts (from 6c219600_manila on this occasion):
if HomeMachineStatus.WM7Device.Value then
  IsWindowsMobile7Device = true
  PredefineItem = 1
  HomeItemCollection = HomeManager:GetHomeCollection(1)
else
  IsWindowsMobile7Device = false
  PredefineItem = 0
  HomeItemCollection = HomeManager:GetHomeCollection()
end
This development is somewhat interesting, and raises interesting questions regarding user interface innovation in Windows Mobile 7.  Given that the Windows Mobile 7 UI will still be hidden below what every other OEM is using, will we see as flashy an interface as on theZuneHD, or will things remain relatively pedestrian, as in Windows Mobile 6.5 now?

Touch X Battery Indicator

HTC HD2 battery capacity is below average. It only has 1230 mAh capacity. Therefore, as one of the HTC HD2 users, I installed Touch X battery indicator with 1% increments.
With this percentage battery indicator on right top corner, you don’t need to click on the battery in order to see the actual battery percentage left. It will turn to yellow colour when below 30% and red colour in 0-10% range.

Add missing task manager on HTC HD2

Who need the task manager on HTC HD2? Yup. HTC did not put the usual task manager on HTC HD2 desktop. You need to do several clicks in order to dig it out. It is not very user friendly. But I can tell you that I don’t need to use task manager to end any program after using it for 1 week. HTC HD2 has more than enough memory for you and me.
