In Defense of a Potential Lack of Upgrade to Windows Phone 7 for the HTC HD2

There has been confusion with the HTC HD2 upgrade path to Windows Phone 7 Series, with HTC Russia retracting their unofficial yes and Microsoft stating that all devices must have the Windows Phone 7 three buttons, and after seeing the device at GDC, it makes sense for several reasons.

The three buttons are a back button, a Windows button, and search. Those three buttons, combined with the OS in Windows Phone 7 Series, help to create a great user experience, and that is one area that Microsoft is placing heavy emphasis in. According to Loke-Uei at the Lobby Lounge at the Microsoft stand at GDC, the search button is context sensitive, meaning that if you hit the button in your contacts application, it will search for relevant contacts. With the HTC HD2 having 5 buttons, 3 of the 5 can be mapped to the back, Windows, and search buttons, but being that the OS is targeted more at consumers, it may create some confusion since those buttons are already hard-labeled on the HD2 for their functions right now.

Additionally, although the HTC HD2 meets the screen resolution down on a capacitive touchscreen as one requirement for Windows Phone 7 Series, Microsoft still has not stated what the exact CPU, GPU, and RAM requirements would be. Microsoft is creating standards here to make it easier for developers to build apps and games for Windows Phone 7 Series, so it makes sense to not only have common APIs, but also have similar hardware. In the video below from part of a GDC session, Microsoft is stating that OEM variations may come in the form of a hardware keyboard. This way, with similar other specs--RAM, memory, processor, and graphics--the Windows Phone 7 user experience--an area that Microsoft is stressing--will be similar across all makes and models of phones.

We'll try to get an official answer at MIX10 or at CTIA in a few short weeks and let you know what Microsoft and HTC will announce for the HTC HD2, but for now it may make the most sense to keep a unified, simple, and consumer user experience

  1. To whom it may concern,
I have proudly purchased an HTC HD2 from T-Mobile (without a contract so I paid in full price) I love my HTC HD2 its breath taking! And better yet I’m a computer technician, so you know I’ve hacked the phone and made it super awesome than it already is. But I have one issue, and it’s not really an issue, will actually it is; anyways this is my question and comments. (I’m being emotional as I say the following) oh please have or force Microsoft to build a “Windows Phone 7” for the beautiful and gorgeous HTC HD2! Please make Microsoft build it for the HTC HD2 I’ve always convinced Apple users to purchased Microsoft products such as the laptop and desktops consisting Windows operating systems, so the least Microsoft can do is to build Windows Phone 7 for HTC HD2 users! Come on what ever happened to business loyalty, care? I’m studying Business Management at U.O.P. and my mgt216 business ethics professor, said “always consist Moral and Business Ethics at all times, so that your company will be successful through GOODWILL!” and I’ve also kept my Time Magazine from year 1999 which Bill Gates talks about 12 business steps to success, and one of those steps were “listen to the consumers and grant them what they want, in order to demonstrate trust and show the consumers that as a business we care for their needs.” So Mr. Gates I want Windows Phone 7 for my HTC HD2 is that too much to ask?!?! Ok I’m done now.
